| SEPTEMBER is Attendance Awareness Month |
|

Attendance matters.
According to the Learning Policy Institute, the beginning of a new school year “sets the tone for student attendance for the whole year.” Students start to connect with each other and with staff. They get into the rhythm of school. Positive attendance, especially the first several weeks of school, sets students up for success.
Recent research published by Panorama Education further explains three life skills that are adversely impacted when students are chronically absent.
Classroom Engagement: “Classroom engagement measures a student's level of interest, participation, and emotional investment in learning activities. Students who are engaged are statistically more likely to attend school regularly compared to their disengaged peers.” Instead of asking your student, “How was school today?” or “How was your test,” ask:
What was the best (or worst) part of your day today and why?
Who did you connect with today and how?
Who did you help/who helped you today and what was that like?
Share something you learned in class.
What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
Self-Management: “Self-management refers to a student's ability to regulate their emotions, behaviors, and thoughts across various situations. This skill set encompasses time management, goal setting, and stress handling.” Evidence of strong self-management includes being on time to class, being prepared with materials, completing assignments to the best of their ability and asking for help. You can support your student’s self-management by checking their attendance, their grades, and asking:
How are you managing your responsibilities (school, job, sports, chores at home, etc.)? How can I help?
Tell me how you’re dealing with distractions at school.
When you’re overwhelmed, what helps calm you down a little bit?
Self-Efficacy: “Self-efficacy is a student's belief in their ability to succeed in specific situations. It reflects their confidence in achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. Students with low self-efficacy are more prone to chronic absenteeism.” To support your student’s self-advocacy, ask:
What are you good at? What are you good at that you have to work really hard to be good at?
What gives you confidence? What are you proud of?
How do you handle it when you’re not feeling confident? How can I support you?
