Principal's Update

9/15/2023

Hello students and families!

We had a great week at SR! A few items from me this week:

One last plea to parents: If you have not done so yet, please make sure to complete your data confirmation in your Aeries account. This important step is required yearly to ensure we receive appropriate funding resources, emergency contact information and more.

If you’d like help with this process, we are hosting  an event in our Student Commons tomorrow, September 16th from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm.

New After School Space: I had the pleasure of visiting the Karma Club (link), a new after school space for teens located in Northgate Mall. If you are looking for a safe & supervised space to hang out with fun activities, this is a great option! It is open Monday-Friday from 2:00-6:00 pm.

School Calendars: Add our calendar to your devices to stay up to date on upcoming events at SR! For example, we have a College Information Night for Seniors coming up next week, Club Rush and more!

*Tuesday, 9/12 was an outlier this week with 238 morning tardies and 304 total due to a traffic incident in the area. Without the outlier, the average morning tardiness for week 3 is closer to 67 and 139 average daily tardiness.

We are seeing significant improvement in tardies and students staying in class. I am proud of everyone’s effort and specifically the students for following our new procedures. Let's keep it up!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Attendance Procedures

Reporting an Absence:
415-485-2335
  • Parents/guardians must make sure that they have called the school or provided their child with a note explaining each absence within three days of the absence. The Attendance Office has voice mail that records messages 24 hours a day.

  • If your student is not feeling well or they need to leave campus early, please remind them they need to check out with the attendance office.  They should not be texting their parents from class.  Off campus passes are required by all students when they need to leave campus.  The attendance office will contact the parent/guardian for permission to leave early.
  • If your student is arriving late to school for medical, dental or personal reasons, they must check in with the attendance office.  Parents are encouraged to call attendance ahead of time, numbers above or send a note.  We have voicemail, so if we do not answer please leave a detailed message. Students are encouraged to bring a note from the medical/dental office of their visit.
  • If your student needs to leave class during the school day, please call ahead or send a note with your student!  Your student should take the note to the attendance office first thing to receive an off grounds pass!

EARLY RELEASE A DAY - SEPT 20th

SRHS Rodent Eradication Plan

Context: In 2021, laws were passed that banned the use of “single feed” pesticides for rodent control. This means that rodent eradication efforts were much safer to other animal populations (like owls), but made it more difficult to mitigate the rodent population. The representative of Hydrex (our contracted extermination service) said that, in Marin, they have seen a major increase in rodent activity for this reason. Our proximity to hillsides and natural areas is also a factor.

The Plan: In order to keep everyone informed about the rodent mitigation efforts, we are providing this bulleted communication that includes our next steps.

  • Principal Dominguez, Dave Pedroli & Tracy Brawdy from M&O, and Assistant Superintendent Bob Marcucci met with a representative from Hydrex, the district’s pest control management contractor on 9/13/23. At this meeting, we discussed the options to increase efforts to bring the rodent issue under control.

  • Beginning on Thursday, 9/21/23 Hydrex will be placing increased traps around the entire campus, focusing on problem areas. These traps will be monitored twice a week and numbers of trapped rodents will be reported to M&O and SRHS administration. We are hoping to see an increase in numbers at first and then a drop off which will signal that we are reducing the rodent population.

  • Should we not see this drop off, we can schedule the use of a rodenticide over the Dec/Jan holiday. Using this level of chemical in a public school requires posting notices around the campus prior to use and notifying the school community. Using rodenticide also creates dead rodents in walls and other places where they can smell and cause other pests to accumulate. For this reason, it is best to do this over a break when staff and students are not present.

  • The M&O team will be working over the next few weeks to locate areas where rodents can enter facilities and sealing those areas.

  • The success of these efforts is also highly dependent on the SRHS staff, students and community. It is important to support this effort by doing the following:

    • Reduce the amount of food in classrooms and offices and try our best to keep food contained to staff rooms and in sealed containers

    • Ensure that places where food is eaten are kept clean. Try to leave no trace, especially when eating inside the building

    • Help by messaging this to our colleagues and students

    • Notify the SRHS administration when you see any evidence of rodents so they can work with M&O to pinpoint efforts

Working together, we can bring this issue under control.

CSF - California Scholarship Federation Application Info

What is CSF?

C.S.F. provided numerous benefits. Members are working with students who have similar interests and participate in club and volunteer activities that give back to the San Rafael community. They will be a part of a 95 year old, respected, non-profit organization, which is older than the National Honor Society and the Southern Academic Fraternities. College admissions officers note a student’s membership in C.S.F. Students who maintain membership for a minimum of four terms in the last three years of high school (one of which must be using grades from their SENIOR year) are awarded Life Time Membership.

How to Apply

California Scholarship Federation application is now open.  10-12th grade students with strong grades in their academic classes should apply to SRHS's honor society.  Applications are available on the SRHS website under: Programs/CSF.  Freshmen will apply in January using their fall semester grades.  Applications CLOSE September 22, 2023.
