San Rafael City Schools, in partnership with Each Mind Matters and the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, will recognize Suicide Prevention Week this week, Oct. 5-9. We hope to broadcast the message that suicide can be prevented, and to reach as many people as possible with the tools and resources to support our students and those around them. Please see the attached letter or visit our SRCS Mental Health and Wellness website for more information.
While each school site will recognize this week differently based on needs and ages of students, we encourage all families to participate in the creation of "Green Heart Art." By placing green hearts in windows, or creating heart collages, we can symbolize the importance of hope, resiliency, and connection during these stressful times. For younger students, this can be a fun activity to do from home, and it provides an opportunity to take a walk and spy other Green Heart homes in the community. For older students, it sends a powerful message that our community acknowledges the stress we are all facing and cares about student mental health and wellbeing.

As finals, the holidays, and the end of the calendar year approaches, San Rafael City Schools' Wellness Team wants to encourage our community to mindfully reflect on how we manage stress. Across all three high school campuses, we will be posting our "Stress Curve" image, to remind students about healthy vs. unhealthy levels of stress, and methods of coping or seeking support. Additionally, the Wellness Team and other campus staff will distribute healthy snacks and other relaxation-related items like essential oils, during the 15 minute break between final exams on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Our goal is to highlight to students that when stress is high, there are supportive adults available on campus, and that they can choose healthy stress-management strategies. Here is an excerpt from a larger article on how to manage stress.
